The best way to get on a stage is to create it for yourself. However, it can be nerve-racking to create your own event AND make sure you get a return on investment. Producing your event is one of the best ways to highlight your services. You are the authority in front of the room!
Now, there’s different ways of looking at the return on investment from these type of events. I’ve done several different events in the past and when I look at it, just from the event itself, usually it is a loser. Meaning that the cost of the room, the food and beverage, the marketing to get people into the event, all of that, the cost outweighed the actual ticket sales.
Why on earth would somebody do an event that is a losing proposition and loses money each and every time? Well, the simple answer is because you have more backend sales.
You must have something to sell to make the event have a positive return on investment. You’re creating an extended sales conversation during the entire event. Plus you’re adding a ton of value to the people who came to the event. Now some people might take offence to this way of thinking, but in reality there should always be a “next step” with any product you have.
I remember going to an event which was $97 to attend. I purchased a training program while there for $2000, when I attended the training then I was pitched a $25,000 mastermind program. I wasn’t offended, because I got the value I came for at each of these levels. And as a producer of events I want to make sure I’m creating value at each level as well.
Public speaking is one of the best ways to sell your program because you have the authority in front of the audience, you’re standing up there, and ultimately, they will do what you ask them to do, but you have to be able to do it properly. That’s one thing that I train on my live training at www.TomJackobs.com/webinar. We go over how to tell stories that actually sell and convert and putting those presentations together. If you’re interested in that, make sure you sign up.
To give you another example, one of the last events that I hosted was a two day workshop style event with 6 speakers and it cost $150 for the event. I had 30 people attend. So I sold $4500 in tickets. The total cost to put the event on was about $5,000 which included the meeting space at the hotel, the food and beverage, all the speaker traveling in, and marketing. But at the end of the event, I think you’ll be amazed at how much was actually produced from the event itself.
While the actual event didn’t produce any revenue, in fact lost $500, the backend sales alone were $115,000 between all of the speakers. Yes that is correct $115,000 were produced on the backend sales and there was actually no pitching from the stage, which was pretty amazing, but not really, because it was designed that way.
You can pitch from the stage without pitching from the stage. That’s one thing that I love to teach entrepreneurs on how to tell their story and how to tell it effectively to sell their program in an elegant way that will leave the prospects feeling awesome and feeling great that they attended your workshop.
