Selling Ideas With Stories

 November 30, 2018

How do you sell an idea to people that might have a different opinion from yourself?

It’s actually not that difficult to do. But it is a process.

It’s a process

First of all, you need to understand why you want other people to believe in your idea.  You need to answer these questions.

What’s the purpose of your idea?

What’s the why behind it?

Why are you passionate about it?

Then you need to connect those questions with a story which is relevant to the person you’re “selling” the idea to

By doing this you will sure they understand why you’re passionate about the position you have, or idea you have.

Second, and this may seem a little counterintuitive, but you need to understand the position of the opposition.

Especially now,  a lot of people are talking about politics and it’s pretty divisive.   And understanding the position of the other party, especially if they disagree with you, is really important.  You can better understand where they’re coming from, and you can relate your idea in a way that they would understand it.

Better yet tell a story that will help chip away from their own position, if it’s a position that you’d love for them to change.   You definitely need to understand the position of the other person and more importantly WHY they have that position.

You can find out by simply asking “tell me the story about why you have that position”.  Oftentimes understanding where they’re coming from will help you craft a better story, and a better positioning to help them to change their mind.

You should also understand that you’re not going to get somebody to change their mind about a firm belief they have overnight.

It’s takes telling stories on a human level and making sure that you never give up. By being authentic, and telling those stories from your heart, you’re going to be able to chip away at somebody else’s opinion and eventually get them on your side.

First of all, understand why you have your position, understand the position of the other person, understand why that person has that purpose, and then just don’t expect it to change overnight. But keep telling your stories in an impactful way, and sooner or later those other positions will start to fade away, if you don’t give up. So I hope that’s helpful for you.
