Let’s make sure that you’re not overweight in your business. What does that really mean?
Let me tell you a little story. As you know I’m a pilot and love flying and I love the analogies between business and being a pilot. The last time that you flew, you probably realized that the plane was running down the runway and at some point it lifts off, well, that’s when the wings are able to support the plane. Physics at work!
You may not realize it but the distance it takes a plane to actually take off depends mostly on the weight of the plane. Weight is a primary determiner of how long it will take that plane to reach enough airspeed to actually take off.
So, of course, I was thinking about how this relates to business. If you have one item that you are trying to sell, one idea and you’re just concentrating on that, your point of taking off and getting that product to market is going to be a lot less time involved than if you have five products that you’re trying to take to market at one time.
Seems pretty straightforward right?
So many of us, myself included, want to do a bunch of stuff, yet we just don’t have the bandwidth to do it all. I suggest to all new business owners I work with that they concentrate on one item first that will create revenue. Once that product/service takes off then and only then start adding on other things because the moment that you add more people into a plane, the longer that runway needs to be for you to actually take off.
If you have too much weight in your plane, you’re going to run out of runway and you’re not going to take off at all. Same thing in business, if you’re trying to do way too much stuff, if you’re trying to sell five different things and come up with five different presentations, and you’re not concentrating on one particular customer and their need, then chances are you’re that business isn’t going to be taking off very quickly.
Look at your business, are you doing more than one thing? If so, figure out what is the first thing you should work on to make the greatest impact. Then make sure that you’re doing it really well before you’re adding additional service or products in your business.
Especially when you’re trying to tell stories that relate to your business. Stick with your signature story and make sure that that is as impactful as possible so that you can convert as many people to customers as possible.
