I have a degree in theater and was taught performance skills. A lot of my clients state they can’t perform because they aren’t actors. It’s all about connecting with your audience and being authentic. You are performing your story. I will go through three simple things you can do to help your performance on stage.
The first tip involves stillness. Many public speakers on a stage walk around. No rhythm or purpose to it. They may even stick to being behind the podium only. My advice is to ditch the podium and find a better spot on stage. Learn stillness and pause on stage. Move with purpose and only when needed.
The second tip is about characters. When you talk about others within your story don’t make a dramatic shift. Don’t turn your back and change your voice. Make it a small shift or change to distinguish a change in character.
The shift can be in telling your audience directly. For example, I told my brother not to worry. My brother turned to me and said, “OK, fine!” A small shift in focus and telling the audience of the shift is smoother then changing stance and voice.
The third tip is about setting the whole story in your head before you tell it. It’s not about memorizing every word but memorizing the stages your going to go through. Every time you tell it, it will be a little different so don’t memorize the small details and word for word layout.
In my program Sales Training Program – Always Be Selling System, I have my clients write out their story. I help arrange it and present it in a compelling way. I have the client go through the story superfast once with a cheat sheet and then at normal speed five times without the sheet.
If you can, do this in front of the camera so you can play it back and find your weak spot(s). A common theme is saying ah or um instead of a silent pause. Pauses are great, ahs and ums, not so much.
