How To Navigate Your Business Success

I’m not sure if you know this about me or not, but I’m a pilot, not like a jet pilot or anything like that.  I fly single engine planes as a hobby. It was always a childhood dream of mine and is something fun that I’ve done over the last five years.

I’ve been realizing that there are so many similarities between flying an airplane and running a business.  Especially when it comes to making sure that you’re on track to success.

One of the things that we do when we are planning our flights is to look at “chart” which is a fancy word for a map.   Of course, we have GPS also in the airplanes but using the chart is an old school way of planning and gives you a nice visualization of your route.

We would plot a course to our desired destination and we would then know what heading that we had to go on.   One of the major factors in the air is the wind, so we have to take that into account as well since it will knock us off course.   Along the way you have to make adjustments to your course heading because you’re always being thrown off course. As long as you are making those small changes along the way you will absolutely end up at the final destination that you chose.

At the beginning of the trip, if you allow just a small degree error and don’t correct it then that one degree or two degrees difference is going to be exponentially worse the further that you get along.

All of a sudden on a trip from Chicago to San Francisco, you’d end up in Los Angeles because you did not take corrective action along the way.  Your business is the same way.

What are the indicators which are letting you know you are getting off track in your business?  Are you tracking your KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)? If not you will end up in a drastically different place than you have planned.

I do a lot of sales training with Insurance Agents and small business owners, and I love it.  Especially helping them discover impactful and dramatic stories to tell which will sell.

I always coach them on keeping certain metrics so they know how well they are doing.  Especially the conversion from leads to prospects, prospects to sales conversations, and sales conversations to closed deals.,

If you aren’t keeping track of your metrics then you have no way of knowing if you are on track to hitting your goal.

So I encourage you to keep track of those metrics and make sure that your course is on the way to where you want it to be, your goals.
