The Power of Authenticity: My Journey to Sales Success

 February 20, 2024

By  Tom Jackobs

As a salesperson, I’ve come to realize that being authentic is not just important, it’s crucial. In a world where skepticism runs high and trust is hard to come by, being true to yourself can make all the difference in increasing your sales. So join me on this journey as I explore the power of authenticity in sales and share some do’s and don’ts that will help you grow your business.

What Does it Mean to Be Authentic During Sales?

At first, it may seem simplistic, but many salespeople, including myself, used to believe that we needed to be someone different when engaging in a sales conversation. We felt the need to be amped up, have the gift of gab, and do whatever it took to make the sale. However, I soon realized that this approach was completely false.

The truth is, when you’re being yourself, your prospects can feel it. They sense your genuineness and are more likely to know, like, and trust you. On the other hand, when you try to be someone you’re not, people can tell. They sense the inauthenticity, and it creates a disconnect. In today’s sales environment, where skepticism is high, being authentic is crucial to building trust with your prospects.

Bringing Your Authentic Self to Sales Conversations

One of the best ways to bring your entire authentic self to a sales conversation is by sharing a personal story about why you do what you do. By doing so, you create a connection with your prospect on a deeper level. People want to avoid interacting with someone who is bland and only sticks to the facts. We’re all human, and making that human connection is vital in sales.

Being authentic means being yourself and telling a story that’s relevant to moving the conversation forward. It’s about showing your prospects that you understand their problems and have the solution they need. When you’re authentic, skepticism fades away, and your prospects can envision themselves as a part of the solution.

The Benefit of Authenticity for the Prospect

You might wonder, what’s in it for the prospect? Well, when you’re authentic and present your solution honestly and genuinely, your prospects can see themselves as a part of that solution. They feel understood and heard, and they become more open to making a purchase.

Let me share a story of a client turned dear friend who experienced the power of authenticity firsthand.

She was struggling to grow her fitness business until we started working on incorporating her personal story into her sales conversations. She got vulnerable and shared her childhood story, which created a strong connection with her prospects. The result? She doubled her business in just one year.

Long-Term Success Through Authenticity

In the sales world, we often hear about tactics and tricks to get people to buy. However, I firmly believe that real success in sales goes beyond using gimmicks. It’s about being transparent and authentic with your prospects.

When you’re authentic, you help your prospects understand the true nature of your program or service. You set realistic expectations, and when they see the value and desire for change within themselves, they’ll decide to purchase.

If you’re in sales for the long term and want to build a successful career, then a long-term approach based on authenticity is essential. Forge meaningful friendships and partnerships with your prospects. Remember, it’s not just a one-time transaction; it’s about building relationships that can span decades.

Embrace the Power of Authenticity

Authenticity in sales is not just a buzzword or a trend – it’s a genuine and powerful way to build relationships, trust, and ultimately achieve success. Throughout my journey to sales success, I have learned the true meaning of being authentic during sales.

It’s about bringing your genuine self to every conversation, understanding the value of building long-term relationships with your clients, and prioritizing their needs above all else. By embracing authenticity, you not only benefit yourself as a salesperson but also provide immense value to your prospects by establishing a sincere connection and understanding their unique needs.

Most importantly, authenticity leads to long-term success rather than short-term gains. So I encourage you to embrace the power of authenticity in your own sales journey and see the transformative impact it can have on both yourself and your clients. Ready to take the next step?
