Are you too focused on your highlight reel, meaning all of your accomplishments, to a point that you put off your prospect or audience?
A lot of times when we are presenting in front of a large group, or even one on one, we like to give all the highlights and all the great stuff that we do, which is wonderful. However, it is a better learning experience, in my personal opinion, to also tell the failures that we have gone through. I believe it makes you more believable.
When I was selling personal training I would tell people about my journey of being overweight and going through my own body transformation. I created an instant connection with that person and put them at ease about the body transformation they’re about to go through.
I told them the failures that I had going through it, and how it was a change. It was a change for the better, and it worked when I worked the program and I was very strict about it, and if they do the same thing, they’ll achieve the same results.
However, if I would have just said, “This is me, I’m fit and healthy and everything worked out just fine”, chances are they wouldn’t really believe you in the first place because it sounds too good to be true. You want to make sure that you add some reality and share your trials and tribulations with your audience, or with your prospects, to make sure that there is a human connection between you and them.
A lot of times, if you’re going to be giving a presentation in front of a large group, I would suggest that you write out your highlight reel and you give that to the person that is introducing you, so then when you come on stage you can say something like, “Wow great, thanks for that great introduction. But let me tell you what led up to all of that.” And then the learning comes from you about what it takes to get to where you are today. It makes you more relatable, it makes you a human.
Certainly I’ve had lots of failures in my business and I’ve shared that openly with you, so just check out some of the old YouTube videos as well. Certainly if you look at the earlier ones, they are not as good as they are now.
