Let’s talk about networking. Networking can bring in a lot of business, but you may be the kind of person who hates the meet and greet situations. Here are a few tips to help you get maneuver through a networking group and come out with new contacts.
1. Never go to a networking group to try and sell anything. No one wants to be sold to in that setting. Instead, go there to meet new people and learn about their business. You make connections easier when people feel that you are truly interested in what they do.
2. Have a goal in mind. I always go with the goal to meet two people I can meet with outside the event. Everyone has their phone with them, so it’s easy to pull it out and schedule a meeting. Don’t try to connect with every single person. Make a goal you can accomplish and you’ll come away with new contacts.
3. Arrive early. If you get there late, everyone is already in little groups and it’s hard to interrupt conversation. Get there early so you can introduce yourself and connect with people before they disappear into the groups. If they do, I have a trick for that. Look at their shoes. Feet pointed toward the group are involved in the conversation. Someone with one foot pointing away is ready to leave the group. That’s the person to introduce yourself to.
Arrive early and look for those openings in the little groups. Definitely don’t go there to sell. Go to learn about other people, be a go-giver, and think about how you can help them in their business. When you add value to other people, that value comes right back at you.
